—  About

Aaron Farley is a multidisciplinary artist based in Los Angeles and Lake Arrowhead, CA

Aaron Farley creates objects as variables to study how they function in the world, and in particular how they’re used or interacted with by others. It’s in these systems that the artwork takes place and expresses themes of usefulness, transformation, and the reverberates of action.

Farley began his practice with photography and video. The element of chance is a welcome interruption of artist intent: inconsistencies of technology and printing processes insure a level of authenticity in what becomes of the artwork. Te imagery he composes has been reused in multiple contexts, constantly being re-shot in various locations to create something new. Tis allows for the work to remain alive through the process of transformation and adaptation to the environment.

Favoring modest materials such as wood scraps, spray paint and construction hardware, Farley’s sculptures are meant to be handled. Utility and the capability to transform autonomously creates value in the work, which intervenes with Art’s reliance on object-hood and shifts focus to the external conditions that the work comes in contact with. Te object may be moved, folded, or hung according to the whims of the participant, who may rediscover a sense of playful freedom and collaboration forgotten in childhood. Te sculptures are then documented in photographs to mark the physical transformation of form and material over time, once again confirming the artist in the role of the observer.
